Eurovision

20 May 2006

What a joke. I mean seriously. I watch it most years, and it's still the same tripe. It's like my memory has been wiped and I forgot how bad it is, and there I am, back settling with a beer, looking forward to laughing at all the awful entries.

I also can't believe that the show's only saving grace was Terry Wogan, though. My earliest memories of Terry Wogan were from his chat show and it didn't seem the coolest show in the world. The only talking point rather among my mates was whether he was wearing a toupee or not. It seems Eurovision is his only mainstream appearance on telly these days, but he's an absolute legend on Radio 2.

When I lived in Crawley, I used to wake up to the preceding show (Sarah Kennedy is it?) and enjoy Wogan's show on the way into work. Without meaning to sound like an old fart, it's probably the most soothing way to ease into the day, the music's varied enough without being too sad, and he can be reasonably funny. A real contrast to his TV stuff.

Apparently our European cousins take this stuff much more seriously, but it seems Finland had the right idea. Was a bit like a parody cross between Iron Maiden and Star Trek. I found it really refreshing and it seemed that most of Europe agreed. Whether they took it seriously or not, I don't know. I thought Germany's entry was quite good, but they didn't place. I found the voting really odd though, allies voting for allies and neighbours for neighbours. Makes you wonder how the voting works, whether it's got anything at all to do with the phone vote or the 'quality' of the songs...what a strange show.
